Dog-Friendly Cafes That Go Beyond a Water Bowl

Some cafes tolerate dogs. A handful genuinely welcome them — with outdoor terraces, treats at the counter, and staff who know your dog's name by the second visit.

What Changes When You Travel With a Dog

Planning a Czech trip around a dog is genuinely different — and once you adapt to that, it opens up experiences that most tourists completely miss: forest paths at 7am, pensions with garden breakfasts, riverside stops that take two hours longer than planned.

After four years of travelling Czechia with two dogs, I've learned which compromises are worth making and which ones aren't. This guide is the result of that.

  • Rules vary dramatically between Prague districts — we explain what applies where
  • National parks require dogs on a lead on marked trails
  • Czech pensions are often more dog-friendly than urban hotels
  • Train travel with dogs is straightforward and inexpensive

Five Things Worth Knowing

01

Leash Rules in Cities

Prague requires dogs on a lead in most public spaces. Off-leash areas are designated and signed — look for "volne pobihani psu" markings on local maps.

02

Train Travel

Czech Railways (CD) allows dogs in all classes for a reduced fare. A muzzle is required in 2nd class; recommended but not always enforced in 1st class on long routes.

03

National Park Access

Dogs are permitted in Krkonose, Sumava, and Bohemian Switzerland on marked trails, on a lead. Some restricted zones prohibit dogs entirely — check park websites before you go.

04

Vet Clinics

Emergency veterinary care is accessible in all major Czech cities. The Prague vet network has English-speaking staff at several locations; carry your dog's EU passport.

05

Water & Heat

Czech summers can get warm. Many parks have streams where dogs can cool down. Avoid long trail walks between 11am and 3pm in July and August.

Cesky Krumlov historic town

The Czech Countryside Is the Real Destination

Prague is a great base, but the most rewarding dog trips happen outside the capital. Small towns like Cesky Krumlov, Telc, and Slavonice have quiet squares, open countryside nearby, and family-run guesthouses where a dog arriving at the door is treated as an ordinary, welcome thing.

The Bohemian and Moravian countryside is extraordinarily well-suited to slow travel with a dog — low traffic, good trail marking, and a culture of outdoor life that dates back long before it became a marketing concept.

Written by someone who actually does this

Dog owner, travel writer, Czech resident since 2018

I moved to Brno with two dogs in 2018 and have spent the years since figuring out how to travel Czechia without leaving them behind. Everything on this site comes from actual trips — no press releases, no sponsored stays.

My sources are trail maps from Mapy.cz, national park information from NP Sumava and KRNAP, and years of direct experience with what actually works when you're managing a dog and a rucksack at the same time.
